Data Scientist – Deep Digital Cornwall ERDF funded project
This new full-time post is available from May 2021 on a fixed term basis until 30th June 2023, based in Cornish Lithium’s office in Penryn, Cornwall.
Summary of the role
Cornish Lithium is a pioneering mineral exploration company focussed on developing the environmentally responsible extraction of lithium and other battery metals in Cornwall. We are delivery partners in the three year EU funded ‘Deep Digital Cornwall’ project, led by the University of Exeter, and we are looking for a motivated Data Scientist to join our team, with the drive and enthusiasm needed to help deliver this exciting innovation project.
Deep Digital Cornwall will provide SME businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with access to research skills, knowledge anddata, and provide facilities to carry out digital research and development of innovative products related to the underground environment (mining, geothermal, civil engineering, environmental, surveying, water resources, planning and permitting, heritage, tourism) and its connections to the surface. A new ‘Deep Digital Cornwall’ Hub will be established on the Penryn University Campus, including a visualisation suite and specialist computer facility, gathering together public and propriety information about the subsurface. A large team of academics and specialists from the University of Exeter (Camborne School of Mines and Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence), South West CoE in Satellite Applications, and Cornwall Resources Ltd., will help SMEs tackle digital research challenges and expand. The aim is to create a world-leading cluster of research-active, highly innovative businesses.
The Data Scientist will work closely with the project manager and other technical staff on the Cornish Lithium team, and the wider Deep Digital Cornwall team, working to tight deadlines and clear budgets. The ideal candidate will have experience of delivering successful research or innovation projects, and be self reliant and highly motivated. Excellent interpersonal and IT skills are key. In addition, they will be proficient in coding and database management language(s) and will ideally have experience in:
- Developing databases, and developing AI and ML tools working with industry partners and academic institutions
- Managing relationships with key stakeholders
A knowledge of geology and the subsurface is desirable but not a requirement.
Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and qualifications. 25 days’ annual leave per annum
