Research and Innovation Administrator
Cornish Lithium is a highly innovative British mineral exploration company focussed on the sustainable extraction of lithium and other battery metals in the historically significant mining district of Cornwall, UK. Over the past two years the Company has significantly grown its research activity and is now seeking to appoint a Research and Innovation Administrator.
We’re looking for someone energetic, with the drive and enthusiasm needed to support this rapidly-growing section of the business. R&D is a key part of Cornish Lithium’s approach to mineral exploration and extraction, and enables the Company to stay at the forefront of innovation. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience with research development, including a strong track record in preparation, coordination and monitoring of grant proposals. This role will report to the Innovation Lead. The successful candidate will be able to evidence, through experience and track-record, the following qualities:
- Substantial experience with research development and grant proposal preparation, coordination and monitoring, ideally including for Innovate UK.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of working as part of a tight-knit team, but also capable of working independently with limited supervision, including experience in prioritising and working under pressure.
- Experience in delivering to deadlines and of taking responsibility and ownership of project delivery.
- Good report writing, organisational and time management skills.
- Good IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
- Ability to risk assess and manage Health and Safety as necessary.
- Ability to effectively communicate with research collaborators, stakeholders and the wider public, and to assist with outreach and community engagement.
- Ability to communicate at all levels within the Company, both with the technical teams and with senior management.
- Educated to first degree level or equivalent.
- Interest in minerals extraction, renewable energy and the move to a net zero carbon economy
- Good knowledge of national agendas and policies for research and impact in the UK.
- Support the full research project lifecycle from inception through to impact.
- Supporting the aims and ambitions of the technical team through horizon scanning for grant opportunities and identifying potential collaborations with industry and academia.
- Managing and being a point of contact through the Project lifecycle for sub-contractors and other consortium members.
- Managing and coordinating legal & financial documentation required for the successful implementation of awarded grants.
- Identifying funding opportunities, coordinating bid development (supporting both research development and financial elements).
- Research project management and delivery (including financial management post-award) to post-project development and reporting.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with key innovation partners in industry and academia as well as funding bodies such as Innovate UK.
- Support the Innovation Lead in monitoring of project performance and providing management information (e.g. success rates with various funders). This includes ensuring that accurate records for all grants and external funding, including submissions, awards, and success rates, are kept and maintained.
- Understanding of the administrative and technical processes (including financial) associated with the research lifecycle, including the ability to produce costings using appropriate tools/systems if required, and signpost academics accordingly.
- Manage a pipeline of applications in development, proactively managing timelines and progress of bid preparation with academic and other colleagues.
- Co-ordinate and lead research development support for standard to high risk/complex bids, drawing in expert support as required from other Directorates. This includes as appropriate authoring elements of proposals; ensuring the proposals meet funder’s criteria and technical requirements; internal processes are fulfilled (e.g. peer review and approvals); budget preparations and costings undertaken; and the proposal is submitted.
- Ensure effective delivery for research project support: start-up and contract negotiation; handover to technical team lead; subject expert advice to project team on operational and procedural matters as well as coordinating ongoing administration and support, and appropriate closure and post project reporting.
- Potential to line manage externally funded project staff to ensure their effective performance and personal development.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of strategic priorities for research and impact for Cornish Lithium and its rapidly evolving business.
- Support in the provision of training to technical team staff on all research development and management matters.
Salary and Hours
The salary for this role is negotiable, depending on experience, and it will be based at the Company’s offices at the University Campus, Penryn, Cornwall. Working hours are typically 37.5 hours per week, but there may be a need for flexible and out of hours working, and extensive travel throughout the south-west and further afield. Annual leave comprises 25 days’ holiday per year, plus Bank Holidays.
