Projects
Cornish Lithium is investigating the opportunity for low-carbon production of lithium and other battery metals across Cornwall. Lithium is a vital component of lithium-ion batteries, such as those used in electric vehicles (‘EVs’), grid storage for renewable energy and mobile phones. The move towards low carbon technologies, and particularly EVs, means that the demand for lithium is growing rapidly across the globe, making it vitally important for the UK to secure a domestic supply of the metal.
With mineral rights agreements in place covering over 500km2 Cornwall, we believe we are in an advantageous position to assess projects across the region. Overviews of our major workstreams can be found below (please click on the links for more information).
Lithium in Geothermal Waters
Historic records show that lithium is contained within geothermal waters (or ‘hot springs’) which naturally circulate at depth beneath our feet in Cornwall. These waters are contained within permeable geological structures underground; in many cases these structures cut across the region and can penetrate to great depths. Cornish Lithium is evaluating the economic viability of extracting lithium from these waters through regional exploration and targeted drilling campaigns.
Lithium in Hard Rock
The granite rock which underlies Cornwall and West Devon is enriched in lithium, which is contained within mica minerals such as zinnwaldite and lepidolite. Cornish Lithium is evaluating the potential to extract lithium directly from these mica minerals across prospective areas of the County.
Other Battery Metals
Cornwall has significant potential to produce other metals vital for clean growth such as tin, copper, cobalt and tungsten. These are contained within steeply dipping narrow veins, and Cornish Lithium is exploring the potential for such projects, utilising modern exploration techniques alongside the wealth of data contained within our historic archives.
