GeoCubed

Established as a joint venture, GeoCubed is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Cornish Lithium plc following acquisition by Cornish Lithium in 2022. GeoCubed is operating a pioneering pilot lithium extraction plant at Cornish Lithium’s United Downs site. The GeoCubed pilot plant is testing Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology to recover lithium from geothermal waters from Cornish Lithium’s exploration drilling and testing programme in Cornwall. The UK Government invested in the project through the Getting Building Fund.

Project

A pilot-scale lithium extraction plant has been constructed at the Cornish Lithium United Downs site. The pilot plant is to demonstrate that lithium hydroxide, a key component of lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, can be produced in Cornwall from naturally occurring geothermal waters with a net zero carbon footprint. Domestic production of this critical metal is vital for the UK to deliver its zero carbon targets, clean growth ambitions and sustain and grow the vehicle manufacturing sector.
