Lithium potential
in geothermal waters
Exploration drilling at our Blackwater exploration project is now complete. Data obtained from this project will improve our understanding of the geological structures underground and the potential of lithium in geothermal waters. Our laboratory team will continue to analyse the water collected at the site which will guide potential next steps, however, there are currently no plans for further work at this location. We would like to express our thanks to the Parish Council and local community during this project.
Frequently asked questions
The Blackwater area near Redruth was chosen as a promising site to explore for lithium in geothermal waters after reviewing historic mining data for the area, 3D modelling and intensive desk studies.
Exploration drilling took place at this site from April to October 2023, including testing of the geothermal waters intercepted in permeable structures. Full site reinstatement was completed in November 2024.
The data from this site will provide an informed understanding of underground geological structures and potential of lithium in geothermal waters in the area and in Cornwall. There are currently no plans for future work at this site.
The final depth of the borehole was around 2km, and a final borehole temperature of 70 degrees. Permeable structures were intercepted, with lithium found in the geothermal waters flowing through them.
The Mineral Planning Authority at Cornwall Council provided temporary permission for exploration work, under the submission number PA23/01155 and permission was sought from the Environment Agency. The landowner and mineral rights owners also provided agreements for this work.
